jim in ny: To anwnser your original question, yes it can be done. Agree with others that it may not be best way. I am by no means a skilled mechanic but can drop pump, and uncouple drive shaft, unbolt pressure plate and remove disc in less than hour. After this is done you can look things over and decide where to go from there.
