The alternators on my 56 series tractors have the wires as you described, plus one to the small terminal post ( marked GRD ). That wire must be broken off of the wiring harness at the point where the mesh cable wrapping material ends. Check to see if this is the case. Splice in some new wire, start engine and test for charging. Another thing that prevents charging is a failed resistor. Remove the sheet metal plate just to the left of the park lock lever. Here you will see the voltage regulator. Either just above or below it is the resistor. About 2 inches long ,made of porcelain , should have wires connected to tabs, one on each end. I have replaced several of them over the years. Weldon
