I have a 686 that suddenly began knocking just aft of the clutch, just under the starter. It happened this summer while raking (double rake that hydraulicly steers). Had to pull it aside and continue with another tractor and luckily it was the last field so I"m just getting ready to tackle it. The rap sounds as bad as if I lost a rod. It is constant about a half second apart. Moving, stationary, clutch in or out, T/A in high or low, the noise it the same. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the power transmittion to the PTO or the hydraulic pump since both these are live. I didn"t test the hydrualics but the power steering works fine. Any suggestions on where to start? I rebuilt the engine two years ago and replaced the clutch so there is a possibility there also. Thanks for any help.
