Thanks for the reply. Reading my owner manual about the clutch adjustment is what gave me this question. It clearly is designed to run with constant contact, but my book shows a sketch of the linkage with a spring connected to the release arm that will keep constant pressure on the bearing. My tractor doesn't have the spring and I'm trying to find someone with a 385/485 to verify the presence of a spring.
