#1.) Use a #194 bulb for an "idiot light". That is what the Delco alternator was designed to work with in it's original application.. Higher wattage lamp = backfeed to ignition, and trouble shutting off engine. Lower wattage lamp = alternator may not "excite" at slow speed, and light may glow when it shouldn't. #2.) STOP UNHOOKING THE BATTERY WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, unless you like "killing" your alternator. That shade-tree mechanic's trick to check if a GENERATOR was charging is NOT ADVISABLE with a solid-state alternator. Use a VOLTMETER to verify the alternator is putting out over 14 Volts and under 15 Volts.
