Bob's advice below is right on! A couple added notes: 1 - The best place to stick your voltmeter to determine whether the alternator is working is directly across the battery posts. 2 - Unlike generators, alternators are extremely susceptible to damage from open/short circuits while in operation. Never, NEVER disconnect a battery cable, remove a warning light, pull the aux wiring plug etc. with the engine running! On yours there's a good chance you toasted the internal regulator or something, thus the problems you are now having. Regarding the engine quitting after a couple minutes of running, when it does it again immediately pull a plug wire and crank the engine to determine if it's still getting spark. If no spark, look for a bad ballast resistor. This is a fairly common failure with them (resistor goes open circuit when after it heats up...). However if you find you still have spark be looking for a fuel starvation problem. Good luck!
