Your dislike of Farmalls is noted. There is a possibility that both caps have a defective cork or neoprene seal in them. As well, the tangs on the bottom of the cap that fit into the opposing openings may not be tightening down the cap far enough due to prior wear on the flange to make the cap seal against the neck of the tank. When this happens to me I make a cork seal from bulk sheet cork that is somewhat thicker than the seal in the new cap. Remove the old (New) seal and replace it with the one cut from the sheet cork. Has always fixed my leakers. Adapt and overcome.
