Here is my 2 cents worth. It can be done, and has been done for up to 75 years on M’s. That being said there could be a lot of crud built up in the water passages in that block. I have seen and heard about many heads on M’s cracking, and I have a theory that I have bounced around as to why. My theory is that poor water circulation due to all those years and who knows what kind of water and anti-freeze mixes leaving behind (mostly in the back of the block) all kinds of muck etc. I recommend taking the block out, and to a good machine shop and get it cleaned thoroughly. After all everyone needs a good bath sooner or later to remove the goo! :>}
