I don't know if this would apply to anyone, but a situation in our town is a good lesson to anyone thinking of adding on to their building. The local tool / equipment rental shop added a 18' x 60' addition on to the side of their building this winter.
The city waited until it was completed to inform the owner that because he had NO building permit the structure would have to be removed. He applied for a variance and was denied, appealed the ruling and was denied again.
He has 30 days to remove the addition!
