Some good posts here, but I would like to add a little. If you have good fuel flow to the carburetor, then it is electrical, if not you have a fuel line restriction. First, if it runs while you have the starter engaged and then dies, and when you try to start doesn’t fire (which is how you described it) then it is probably coil or condenser or both. Replace them with good parts and I believe your problem will be solved. I doubt it is wired incorrectly, because if that was the case it should be trying to run every time you have the starter engaged. However, it would take only a couple of minutes to verify this with a volt meter or test light attached to the power wire on the coil. My two cents…
