The mechanical TA's experience the same problems as the hydraulic TA's. The low side is usually the problem and with them it's the ramp and roller assembly. The rollers get flat spots in them and they won't roll up and wedge properly to lock. They also get gummed up from the use of the heavier oil that they used to use in them. I've replaced 2 TA's and rebuilt one and they all had the problem in the ramp and roller setup. As was stated earlier, using the TA to downshift for slowing down or attempting to use it to hold you back going down a hill will cause it to free wheel and they can explode fairly quickly.
