The big boys tell me that this is "normal" and the reason they do this is because this engine was designed around a 15:1 compression ratio.

They tell me that the cure is to install the high compression (17:1) pistons and to make sure the valves and seats are up to standard specs (you can't grind the valves and seats on a German engine, as this will lower the ratio even more).

I, for one, just cannot get used to this little 'cold smoke' feature, so as soon as my 966 gets outta the shop, in this one goes. :>(
