Unique piece on an M??

I went and looked at a 51' Farmall M today, and found out that it had live hydraulics, a smaller tank to start on gas, and maybe switch over, and then the unique piece was a lever that runs down below where the belt pulley assembly would be. He said that he had an older fella tell him that it was a hi/low gear transmission lever. Any insite on this subject is greatly appreciatied!!
