Rich - you're right about the fix (4th-5th sliding gear could be worn out). But that sliding gear only engages a mating countershaft gear when the trans is in 4th. In road gear, teeth in the hub of the sliding gear act as a direct clutch, locking the transmission input and output shafts together. Once 5th is engaged, the sliding gear spins but carries load only thru it's hub. The 5th "gear" (the clutch teeth in the hub) can wear out or break from abuse when shifted - especially if the tractor's shifted while in motion without double clutching.
