If you drain 1 - 2 gallons, the pump drive seal will be above the lube oil level in the tranny.

Tip: If you are going through the trouble to replace the pump drive seal, figure on replacing the input shaft seal directly above it at the same time. Chances are this seal is worn out too. And even though it's above the normal oil level in the transmission, it WILL leak when the tractor is running.
