Sounds like something in the bearing. The drive heats up and binds. Does the drive have a noticable "whine" sound to it? I've noticed lately, especially some of the newer ones, tend to run on the hot side. If you want to recover the files that are important to you, get that drive cold and then hook it up as a slave drive. Boot with the new, good drive and then start copying and pasting the files you want to save. This is the time when it pays to have all your files logically sorted on the drive.

Hard drives have very tight tolerances. The heads float on a cushion of air and don't touch the surface of the platters. If you were to scale it up a bit just try and imagine the empire state building flying across the Atlantic Ocean three feet above the water at six-hundred miles an hour. Anyway, good luck with your recovery.

Backing up your data is a must but with the large size of our files these days choosing a backup solution can be somewhat daunting. Currently, my preferred choice is a combination of flash drive for my real important data (finacial, etc.) and an external usb or firewire hard drive for everything else. Alternatively, in the future, be on the look out for "blueray" disks ( they will hold more than a regular cd) and there is even another standard, HVD, that is in the works that will hold up to a terabyte. http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000447030408/
