I finally got lucky and got the points and timing set right with trial and error. It lasted about 40 engine hrs. Now it doesn't have any power and with any load at all will start backfiring out of the exhaust, louder than firecrackers. It ldles fine. The distributor looks good and I set point gap at .020 with the distributor out to make sure it was right. Do these 291 engines have a timing chain that could be causing the problem, If so how would I check it out? It is eating my lunch right now.
