I use one of the insulated frost free tank. Happens to be Universal Co-ops version. For our climate I used the 48" earth tube (minimum length I could get). Only problems are with 1. freezing rain (may have to break the balls loose), 2. if I forget to turn the cows in a couple of days before it gets below 0 sometimes the line freezes in the top of the tank. I also use a propane fired heater on a big tank (different herd), it runs me about $2 a day in gas when the temps are below 20.
