i have 2 of the 6'? big spring tubs in the freestall for my cows. they have been trouble free for 3-4 years. another area of the freestall has a 4'? tub type, not as much traffic= freezeup problems. i also have 3 of the 2 holers with the balls in the heifer barn. as noted the balls tend to freeze shut in very cold weather. they are much harder to clean out than the tub type, although the newer design on the ball type should help that problem. none of the mirafounts have heaters in them, just the risers into the ground. we used 15 gallon soap barrels with the ends cut out for our risers. hth.
