Play develops in the 4 tie rod ends, the steering arms to spindle spline connections, and the internal mesh of gears. The steering shaft is a worm gear that intermeshes with the other 2 gears that are attached to the pitman arms, they have a built up area where they engage the worm gear.Play and wear builds in all these areas.Add all that up plus wear in bearings/bushings and its a miracle they steer at all.Mine has about 1/2 a rotation play and Ive done all I can to tighten it up.The box screws have been almost bottomed out over these past 50 years so there is no more adjustment available.New gears/shafts are no longer available, and a used P/S unit wont be cheap and may leak...besides,you need to plumb in the new unit and add valving to make the PS unit have priority over the hydra touch valving/implements. Overall,Ute owners either have to live with the sloppiness,or spent a bundle to do something about it.
