After eliminating play from spindle-to-steering arm, tie rod ends, do this:(1) While turning wheel back and forth, watch the left steering arm at str. box. This will tell you how much play is in the worm gear to left str. arm (worm only connects to left arm,not both). If it's bad, you can remove the left arm and have the pin that runs in the worm welded up and reground to take up the slack. (2) If the above appears OK, then remove the right drag link at str. box arm. Then working arm back and forth will indicate how much play is in the left arm to right arm gear mesh. If this is bad it can be adjusted if someone has not adjusted it all the way already. Adjustment is accomplished by loosening the bolts that hold the two halves of box together and turning the two eccentric bolts w/ locknuts on each side(outer edge) of box. This merely slides two halves of box in order to mesh the str. arms together tighter. (3) Also, if the bearing on bottom end of steering worm is worn out it will cause play in steering. If this is the case, you will notice steering wheel moving up and down while turning it back and forth. All of these adjustments may or may not eliminate the play in your box. * The adjustments are better explained in an I/T or IH Blue Ribbon manual.
