On a gas M, if you unbolt the steering wheel stanchion at the tranny deck (3 bolts) you can swing the steering wheel/steering shaft/stanchion assembly upward. (The steering shaft will swing about the U-joint at the forward end of the tank.) This will give sufficient clearance to remove the tank without having to remove the steering shaft.

I'm not familiar with the throttle linkage on the MD - you may have to disconnect or remove it in order to do this.
