It worked something like this:
For small row crop tractors cultivating one row (A, Super A, Cub) a wide front was used that straddled the row.
FOr two row tractors, a narrow front was used at first that went in between the row. In the era of insectacides and rollovers (after World War II) farmers started to prefer widefronts over narrow fronts. It was about ten percent wide versus 90 % narrow in the early 1950s, and IH got into trouble with its dealers over not having a quality cheap widefront, the reason why so many aftermarket widefronts are available for IH. Widefronts continued to gradually gain more acceptence. There IS some more stability with a widefront.
