WIDE narrow

Something I have been wondering for awhile, at least 40 years now... When I was a kid there were a few tractors in the valley which had wide front ends, and dad told me they were built for dry land farming, as opposed to most of the machines there, which were made narrow so the operators could more easily guide them in the furrows in the vegetable fields where they were used. I have seen a few mentions hereabouts of wide front ends being typical of a row crop tractor. Are the different styles of front ends simply user preferance, or do certain uses do better with one style, and other uses the other? Fred
