I am certainly not an expert but I think the primary differances are all inside the carb, venturi sizes etc. I'll have to go look at my 1940 M but I am pretty sure all of the M carbs have the choke control on the inside, as do the super H carbs. The choke rod on the outside of the carb was prone to being snagged by weeds, brush, etc, and pulling the choke closed. Whether this is the reason for changing or not, I do not know.
