As others said, you are most likely 180 degrees out of time. This happens because the mags have a two lobe cam on the breaker points and a 2 to 1 gear between the breaker cam and the rotor of the distributor. You can change by taking breaker point cover off (this contains the 2 to 1 gears) and turning rotor 1/2 turn and putting the cover back on. Never saw one blow the cap off the air cleaner, but my MD blew plenty of the oil in the air cleaner out the intake. I expect a good backfire would blow the cap off.
