Well, my guess is that the starting compression is low, the timing is off, or the injectors aren't releasing the fuel at the proper pressure. The low compression could be caused by a cracked or damaged compression ring, poorly seating valves, or even a leak through an injector fitting. I guess as long as it runs and does its job, it doesn't really need to be fixed, but I would be a little hesitant to run a diesel that needs ether to start it in summer. If it were fixed now, it would probably be a lot cheaper than later after the ether has taken its toll. I am sure a lot of other guys on the forum can give you some more specific info. Good luck!
