The diode is to prevent the #1 aux terminal on the alternator from backfeeding the ignition coil when you turn off the ignition switch. Without the diode the engine will not shut down when you turn off the ignition.

Alternatively you can substitute a small lamp rated at 200 ma or so (or an equivalent series resistance) for the diode. This will limit the backflow current to less than that required to fire the coil. And the lamp will light if the alternator is not charging while the ignition is on - same as the dash idiot light on your car/truck.
