I agree with your description once the front axle pivots far enough to hit a stop. But a wide front is more stable even before it hits the stop because the pivot is higher than the ground. Therefore, the CG cannot move as far laterally. Until it hits the stop, then both narrow and wide must keep the CG within a triangle, but the wide front will not allow the CG to move as much because the pivot is closer to it.
