Rings have only two real important issues and one not too important decision. The end gap of the new ring must be to spec. when installed in the smallest part of the bore (if it was only honed) use a piston top to push the new ring down into the cyl. The least worn area is within two finger widths of the bottom. The ring should be square with the cyl, not tipped. Ring gap is checked with feeler gauges at the gap. If too tight, they must be widened to spec. If gap is to be .005, and measures .002, use a dremel tool to remove just that amount. Too wide causes drastic leaking. The second isue is ring land wear. the ring groove should be square and have parallel sides. Stick a ring into the groove from the outside (like putting a quarter into a vending machine) and see that it has very little play up and down. If the outer rim of the test ring can move more than about 1/8 " the groove needs to be repaired (possible) or piston replaced. #3 I use chrome rings they last. JimN
