From what I gather,once the seal area on the shaft grooves up,no seal will ever live for long and even sleeving is no permanent solution (you still havent fixed the actual gear pumping part).I dont know what they have to replace when rebuilding,but if they have to replace the gears and the main shaft,that would only leave the original housing as the only vintage 1955 part.Thats gotta cost almost what a whole new one is going for. It sorta reminds me of auto parts store rebuilt alternators,starters,water pumps,and power steering pumps(as well as wiper motors,smog pumps,fuel pumps...etc).....they never last as long as new (or the original),because you are starting off with old used component parts already.
