Re-torque head

I helped my dad do a valve job on his H 7 or 8 years ago. He told me that he recently blew the head gasket and was blowing anti-freeze out of the exhaust and when he drained the oil there was anti-freeze that came out first. He had a machine shop check over the head and they said there wasn"t anything wrong with it. I am pretty sure that the head was not re-torqued after it was put on. Neither of us knew it should be done. How should he work it and how long before re-torquing?
