in and out/sideways slop on F-20 break drum shaft

I pulled the dust cover off the right break drum on my 32 F-20 and it was covered with grease. The nut was not not on the drum, and it came off with ease. Inside and on the brakes Grease was everywhere. I finally got it cleaned up good enough to see things, and removed the brakes. Looking around, I noticed the drum shaft had a 1in in and out play, and a tiny bit of sideways play. Im assuming a bearing is going out. If so, what do I do to replace it? Also, I notice a 1in recess around the shaft to the back plate around 3/8ths away from the shaft/ Did packing go in there? If so, which way would be right to rewind it in replacing it? Thanks for the help.
