If you hear the knock all the time when the engine is running, you can sometimes diagnose if it is a rod bearing by pulling off or shorting out one spark plug wire at a time and see if the knocking sound lessens on any one cylinder. If so it’s probably either the wrist pin or the rod bearing. Next, I’d pull the oil out, and see if there is any bearing material in the bottom of the pan or on the drain plug. If so, pull the pan and check the bearings as others have advised. If the knock is most noticeable with no load on the engine and is affected by two adjoining cylinders, then it probably is a main bearing and you will need to pull the pan and check the bearings. Something else that it could possibly be is the flywheel bolts coming loose. This can make a rhythmic knocking noise also, but usually this will go away when the clutch is pushed in. Hope this helps…
