766 Transmission Oil Tell-Light...Working Right?

I recently purchased a 766 IH. The transmission oil tell light burns whenever the clutch is in. Otherwise, it stays off. All I have found in the manual is that the light is supposed to go off soon after starting. The reservoir is about 1 gal low (out of 20+). What is the experience of anybody who has one of these, or a 966 or 1066? Thanks.
