The part on the end of the starter with the gear is commonly called a "Bendix end" where I'm from, and yes, the ring gear is the part on the flywheel. When it's removed from the flywheel it's in the shape of a big ring, with teeth on the outside. You'll want to get the Bendix end replaced on the starter, if the rest of the starter is okay/fixable. You may need to purchase an entire rebuilt starter. Thing is, you never said why you think the starter is dead.
