From the factory, it would have had a "mechanical" style temp gauge in the right side of the dash, in the same cluster as the fuel gauge, oil pressure light, and the charge indicator light. The temp gauge would have a tube filled with liquid running down to a sensing bulb screwed into the right side of the head. These worked fine until the tube got damaged, then most guys would just buy a temp gauge and mount it somewhere rather than replace the whole cluster. Sounds like the location of your sender is correct, but the gauge is not.
