It might be a broken head bolt or a surface irregularity causing the head gasket issue. I had a gasket go out on mine, and it was a broken bolt on the exhaust manifold side of the head.

If you pull the head, take a look at the valve face height. If those valves aren’t close to even with the surface of the head it might cause hard starting. If so, it’s time to take it to the machine shop and get the seats replaced and get that compression back up to spec.
