O/T Corn planter

I have an old two row corn planter that I have been using for a few years. The back part of the shovels are rusted off where I believe the hoses for the fertilizer hopper used to attach. I just used to allow the fertilizer to fall on the ground but I believe I have been burning a lot of the corn as it comes up. Should the fertilizer hoses extend low to the ground so that the fertilizer is dropped into the same cavity created with the corn seeds? If the fertilizer is under ground with the seeds can it burn the seed as it germinates or is it more likely to burn a seed after it sprouts above the surface if it is laying above the ground?
