Hi Joe, the 454 has 2 transmissions, a speed transmission and a range transmission. The speed transmission is located in the torque tube behind the clutch. It has the 4 speeds 1 thru 4 and no neutral. The range transmission is located between the speed transmission and the differential. The range transmission has HI(direct drive), Lo, Rev and Neutral. So by putting the Range transmission in Neutral you are able to tow the tractor OK. My first suspect would be the speed transmission is in 2 gears at once, especially if the problem happen when you were changing gears. According to the I&T shop manual the main shaft bearing is lubed from within the transmission by a lube pump but the functioning of the pump cannot be checked from the outside. Good luck JB2
