John, it won't be wd40 that you are seeing. Usually a bad head gasket will show up as coolant in the crankcase. I am thinking of two or three possibilities. On the H air breather system there is a tube from the back of the head into the breather casing, a system for crankcase ventilation. Check there as it could be leaking condensed oil on the back or side of the head. Another possibility is the valve cover gasket leaking enough oil down that it gathers on the edge of the head gasket and appears to be coming from the head gasket. And as you mentioned a hot engine will spread oil far and wide from its source. Check out the things I have mentioned first befor deciding on a new head gasket..good luck...Mike in Exeter Ontario
