If your engine runs and the firing order is correct and you have intermittent backfiring, it could be caused by a lean fuel condition. You alluded to the fact that you had blown back into the gas tank and this had helped but now you have dirt in the bottom of the sediment bowl and it is worse. I would check to make sure that you have good fuel flow to the carburetor for a sustained period (at least a minute) to eliminate this a potential problem.
