Battery ignition units with a resistor have a bypass so the coil gets full voltage when cranking the engine for a hotter spark, and then reverts to the resistor as soon as the start circuit is open. Could be that something is wrong with the resistor or in that circuit. Do you have spark when cranking by hand? Paul
