All the letter series up through the 350's/450's that i know of were 6v positive ground. I've heard the generators were adjustable for up to 16 or 18 volts. I used a resistor for an 85 dodge p/u v8 engine (3 or 4 bucks at auto zone) it's got a hole for mounting and blade-type connectors. I cut a small peice of metal with holes in it and mounted the resistor right beside the coil. I don't know if it's the generator being adjusted wrong or the voltage regulator but I put a 12v battery in my sm and it was getting 20-25 amps pushed into it at about 15.5 volts. lucky I guess. And unless your starter is ready to let go it will be fine with 12v hiting it low voltage heats a motor faster than high voltage.
