I regard 8 volt batteries as a "band aid" fix for hard starting problems. They are more expensive - when you can find them at all. And they are tough to keep properly charged, especially if you don't use the tractor much or run it at low speeds.

Better approach is to spend the $$ getting the starter in good working order. Also make sure you have properly sized battery cables with GOOD (soldered) terminals, and a good 6 volt battery. You'll then have no need for an 8 volt battery!
