The red lever is for engauging the PTO. The button on top, locks the lever in PTO run position. You should also be able to press the button and push the lever forward to stop the PTO.There is a brake in the system. The black box should not be needed if you install a 12 volt alternator with a built in regulator. I have a Chevrolet two prong alternator on my tractor. If you have any issues with overcharging try installing a oil pressure swithch and routing the wires through the switch. This will allow the battery to charge only when the oil pressure activates the switch.(running at above idle)
