It is done to make it easier to steer. With the bottom of the tires closer together it takes less effort to turn, and there is less shock from one wheel hitting an rock, rut, etc. Thwe oplder F series, etc weren't slanted as much, and they would kick the wheel out of your hands if you weren'thanging on tight.
