Chris, the six-volt system on your H didn't require a ballast resistor. It would have only been needed when a previous owner dropped a 12-volt battery in it. In fact, it was probably originally equipped with a magneto. You can determine whether a ballast resistor is present either by visually tracing the coil primary hot wire back to the switch, or measuring voltage to your coil. A reading greater than 9.5 volts would indicate there is no ballast resistor present. Running a 6-volt coil with 12 volts will burn the points and eventually cause the coil to fail. There are 3 ohm coils available which don't need the resistor to run on 12 volts. You should check to make sure which one is on your tractor. #1 cylinder is indeed most forward. With the #1 cylinder at compression TDC, the spark will occur when the points just open.

If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
