Dunno how much of an "acid test" this would be, but it's a neat feature of the mechanical TAs. This is a trick my dad taught me when we were picking stone with the 560:

Go up an incline steep enough that the tractor will roll backwards if you push the clutch. Go slow. Push the clutch in halfway. The tractor should stop and shouldn't roll back down the hill. IMHO, that's the sign of a good TA unit.
