Greg, I would suggest staying with the generator, it will be cheaper and easier. Unless you plan on running a huge set of lights the generator will keep up with the modest electrical demands of a 706 gas or diesel. In some cases in changing to an alternator you would have to change polarity, which can be a real pain. Also, the wiring diagrams for this tractor would cover a generator, not an alternator.
